Grace Jones: Rihanna’s Lookbook

Emerging as a successful international model, actress and later a musical artist during an era where uniqueness was largely celebrated, Grace Jones maintained an iconic cult status much before Rihanna could waddle in Pampers. Her confident demeanour, lean physique, feline eyes and carved features won her accolades such as playing Zula in Conan the Destroyer (1984) and villainess May Day in James Bond – A View to a Kill (1985). Still a respected recording artist to present day, with a penchant for extreme haircuts and avant-garde outfits, It’s no wonder Johanna’s stylists look to Jones to carve her an enduring image.

Jones not only exemplified the unisex ‘Flat Top’ during the 70s that was later popularised throughout the 80s, she influenced the cross-dressing movement also sported by the likes of Annie ‘Sweet Dreams’ Lennox. In the 1990s, she left a permanent mark on pop culture with her turn as over-the-top supermodel Strange in Eddie Murphy’s “Boomerang”.
