KELIS | 4TH OF JULY

After her painful and highly publicised break up from philandering NAS,  their equally publicised reunion and  becoming a mother, who’d have guessed Kelis would then bang out with this helluva BIG tune? Time to don your bodycon dress and stomp those heels on a dancefloor.

It seems Kelis has swerved her rebellious R&B swagger, husky tones and wonky sound into a  refined dance  niche.  Her new album ‘Flesh Tone’ is a tight body of work offering 9 tracks of evocative lyrics,  hypnotic repetitions and exhilarating beats. The hooks are  familiar in places jumping between decades, with lashings of house yet carved with enough finesse to make it her own.

Kelis has always been a self-assured musician – which carries the album well, allowing us a further glimpse into her eclectic character, reassuring the ears this new direction is organic rather than a sales-chasing manoeuvre.
